Salary for housewives

September 20, 2012 12:22 am | Updated 12:22 am IST

This refers to media reports that the government proposes to make it mandatory for men to share their income with their wives who stay at home and do housework. It is the most absurd proposal which, if implemented, will have disastrous consequences. Many young women go to work these days. Will they be required to pay their husbands for the help they extend in household work?

Marriage means equal and joint responsibilities. If the man is the sole breadwinner, there is nothing wrong in the woman doing household work. She can and should plan the expenses and savings. When she is in control of the finances — and her husband — what is the need for a law?
