Communal clashes in Saharanpur speak volumes about the extent to which the law and order situation has deteriorated in Uttar Pradesh. Any attempt by vested interests to play politics, oblivious to the possible repercussions, should be condemned. The State government should send a stern message to those who fan communal flames, and do everything possible to restore law and order.

People donate money and labour to places of worship. But the money, it appears, is used in many places not for the welfare of the community but for creating animosity among different faiths. Religious leaders should stop teaching their followers that their faith is supreme and that other faiths and scriptures are false. Leaders who teach their own religious scriptures along with the goodness in other holy books should be rewarded. Unless the poisoning of innocent minds is prevented, communal clashes will continue and harmony will remain a distant dream.

The seeds of “divide and rule” sown by the British are still alive in India. That even a small argument blows up into a communal riot is a pointer to the level of our intolerance. We need to remember that we belong to the land of the Buddha and Gandhi. Non-violence is a part of our our heritage.
