Sagacious indeed

The Hindu, in a well reasoned analysis, has endorsed the Srikrishna Committee's recommendation of a Telangana Regional Council within a united Andhra Pradesh as the best way forward in resolving the demand for a separate state (“A sagacious prescription,” Jan. 7). The Committee cannot be faulted for considering multiple options as the issue is too complicated.

It is naïve to expect the politicians of the State to agree to the proposal straightway. The Centre should be firm enough to push through the creation of a Council.

K.M. Sundaram,

Chennai

An empowered Telangana Regional Council can address the problems of the backward region, retaining the political integrity and identity of Andhra Pradesh. The Srikrishna Committee has shown great wisdom. Its recommendation should be accepted by all parties in the interests of overall development.

Mirle Karthik,

Bangalore

The people of the Telangana region should understand that the campaign for a separate state is spearheaded by the politically unemployed. Only politicians, not the common man, will benefit from it. Socio-economic development can be achieved only by political will and the effective functioning of a regional council will ensure that.

Prathyusha Sistu,

Hyderabad

The Committee has done a laudable job. It is better to keep Andhra Pradesh united, with Telangana as an autonomous region. Bifurcation will lead to instability and give rise to a precarious situation, at least for a few years. It is now the duty of all political parties to observe restraint. The government should take a decision not with the intention to appease a section but in the larger national interest.

R.S. Sreeram,

Thiruvananthapuram

A separate state will divide the resources of the parent state. Political instability, as in Jharkhand, will deal a death blow to development work in a new state. There will be demands for bifurcation and trifurcation in other States as well.

Pallavi Kantilal Tated,

New Delhi

A new State will only result in more expenditure on creating another Legislative Assembly building, allocating bungalows for Ministers and so on. Jharkhand was created out of Bihar but it has been neither politically stable nor economically prosperous.

The Srikrishna report has clearly said that the Rayalaseema region is the most backward. Instead of wasting their energies on an agitation for a separate state of Telangana, all MLAs would do well to concentrate on development.

Deendayal M. Lulla,

Mumbai

As the Srikrishna report has pinpointed to Rayalaseema as the most backward region, it cannot be said that political leaders ignored the Telangana region and the rest of the State has progressed at its expense.

G. Ramamohan,

Guntur

The bifurcation of a well developed State because self-centred politicians want a separate Telangana is uncalled for. The Srikrishna Committee report has shown the way forward, and we must move ahead.

M.C.S. Pavan Kumar,

Bangalore

Very few seem to be interested in going through the chapters which present a detailed picture of the development pattern of all regions. The demand for a separate state is based on the development criteria and the report says the Rayalaseema region, not Telangana, is the least developed.

Prasanth Balantrapu,

Vijayawada

The Telangana issue can be settled only in Parliament. There should be consultations in that direction, rather than a standoff between the pro- and anti-Telangana forces. Politicians, instead of appearing on numerous television channels, should get to the root of the problem. Students should realise that they will always bear the brunt of police action. They should not lose their academic year or end their lives.

P.S.S. Murthy,

Hyderabad
