The recognition for the Indian rupee is long overdue and it has not come a day soon particularly after the economy has opened up. At the same time, the choice of Devanagari script is not representative of the whole India. How computer-friendly this symbol is compared to the $ symbol on a QWERTY keyboard is a big question.

What difference does it make to our economy? We are still a long way off from being in the reckoning with the dollar, pound, euro or yen. With superstitions being the fad now, I hope the new symbol will prove lucky for our financial sector in providing it the much-needed boost.
