It is unfortunate that despite the widespread criticism and outrage, the Manmohan Singh government has introduced the bill proposing the first amendment to the RTI Act in the Lok Sabha (Aug.13). I deem August 12 to be one of the darkest days of Indian democracy.

It is needless to say that the said bill would be passed unanimously and without any discussions as there is no one to oppose it and represent the voice of the people in Parliament. In a way, the UPA government has undone the goodwill it had earned because of the RTI Act. All the so-called national political parties have proved that they are beyond any questions of transparency and accountability which are applicable only to ordinary mortals.
