Pictures in the media that show defence personnel and civilians in Kashmir raising slogans against Pakistan after having lost colleagues and loved ones to terror attacks are distressing. Such images tell the true story of the reality in the troubled State — where the political class is fumbling to find ways to solve the festering issue. How many more people should end up losing their lives before there is action?

Militancy in the Kashmir Valley is turning out to be hydra-headed, devouring many a sane voice. Unless all those who believe in peace commit themselves to a resolution of the issues without bloodshed, the threats to lives and liberty in Kashmir will only persist. Peace will remain elusive.

The violence in Kashmir only seems to be spiralling out of control, with the PDP-BJP coalition government unable to address the law and order situation. Perhaps the best possible course in such circumstances is for the Central government to take direct control and quell the violence with an iron hand as a dialogue with stakeholders is proving to be a non-starter. People in the State are suffering greatly.

The time has come for the political class to exhibit robust political willpower and lend a free hand to security forces in the Kashmir Valley to root out militancy and its various support systems. It is an achievable task provided our leaders speak in one voice. Numerous opportunities have already been given to anti-national elements to come to the peace table but they only seem to be thumbing their nose at India.
