The report that crackers were found in the burnt coach of Tamil Nadu Express (Aug. 31) should serve as an eye-opener to many of us. Crackers are freely available throughout the year. People fire crackers for anything and everything, be it a marriage, religious procession or a celebration of victory in sports, elections, etc. There was a time when crackers were fired only during Diwali. Is it not time restrictions were enforced on their sale and use in the larger interests of society?
