Reaching Mars

The >report on the Mars Orbiter (Sept. 23) has highlighted what should be a happy moment for India and its scientists. However, I wish to point out something else. Recently, the Ministry of Science and Technology said that it would ensure that scientists spent time in schools to help students enhance their scientific knowledge. But has that work begun?

ISRO has installed large space-tracking and application facility at Byalalu village near Bangalore. The local people call it “Bili Baanale.” Most people there do not know what its functions are, other than that it is ISRO property. Has the scientific community or school administration in the area ever tried to make students aware of what “Bili Baanale” does? Creating scientific awareness is the key to ensuring that children develop an enthusiasm to learn about science, more so in rural India.
