The WHO and UNICEF state that human milk should be the first alternative for an infant when it is not possible for the mother to breastfeed (“ >Rajasthan govt. opens mother’s milk bank ,” March 27). With wet-nursing not always a viable option, the bank can be a boon for India, a country which suffers from a high maternal and infant mortality rate on account of the poor health conditions of women.

There are already framed guidelines for human milk banking which need immediate implementation in order to tackle the risk of transmission of communicable diseases from unregulated sources.
