This refers to the report “EC pulls up Rahul, sends notice to Modi” (Nov. 14), where the Congress vice-president has been “warned” to be more careful in his speeches, and the Gujarat Chief Minister asked to explain his “bloodied hand” remark. The truth of the matter is that, of late, rabble-rousing has reached unacceptable levels. The political class must ensure that communal harmony is strengthened and peace maintained. It must also remember that voters now have the option of pressing the NOTA button.

It is well-known that all political outfits, including the national parties, resort to undesirable tactics such as making derogatory speeches against their rivals to cover up their failures and mislead people. However, voters are smart and have shown that they elect candidates based on their past performance and vision. Parties and their candidates should go to people with their achievements and plan of action to address the issues before the nation.

The Election Commission’s act of pulling up Mr. Gandhi and sending notice to Mr. Modi is unacceptable. Impromptu speeches by leaders may include satire and irony, which are but part and parcel of political rhetoric.
