Protecting minorities

The Prevention of Communal and Targeted Violence (Access to Justice and Reparations) bill, set out to protect the religious and linguistic minorities, is a step in the right direction (June 21). If it becomes law, it will surely make it difficult for public servants to ignore their duty and still go unpunished. Imprisonment of 10 years, even on paper, will serve as a huge deterrent.

The move to enact a law on the prevention of communal and targeted violence to ensure that the minorities are protected is welcome. The provision seeking to punish public servants for dereliction of duty is good too. But can we ensure that the police will act when the crime is being committed by a mob right under their nose? We may have a law that covers all aspects but do we have the will to implement the process of conviction, punishment and justice?
