Politics in J&K

The BJP appears to have been honest in preparing a common minimum programme but the PDP appears to be bent on reversing this. It is almost as if the PDP has decided to follow a different CMP than what was agreed upon (“ >Mufti orders release of political prisoners ,” March 8).

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is taking steps that will cause the State many setbacks, and the time has come for the BJP to now protest and warn the PDP. Going to the polls once again should not be considered a negative step. Any hidden agenda of siding with separatist elements must be nipped in the bud.

Mufti Mohammad Sayeed appears to be courting controversy right from Day 1. I am sure it will be difficult now for the BJP to put forth its plan to rehabilitate nearly 60,000 Kashmiri Pandit families who left the Kashmir Valley. It took almost two months for the BJP and the PDP to reach common ground and arrive at a consensus on a CMP. The PDP should respect the people’s mandate and contemplate on giving them a stable government, with a focus on development and job opportunities. The BJP-PDP alliance may be a coming together of the “North Pole and the South Pole”, and one has to wait and watch to see whether this odd coalition will ever work.

One expected Mr. Sayeed to start off well but he hasn’t, having begun with his atrocious remarks giving credit to separatists and Pakistan for the smooth conduct of the elections and then making needless remarks given the volatile situation still prevalent in the State. He must understand that the people of Jammu and Kashmir yearn for good governance.

He must refrain from indulging in cheap political gimmicks and stick to a socio-economic agenda that looks at growth and development. Prime Minister Narendra Modi must rein him in and tell him to adhere to the CMP in the interest of the State and the nation.
