Police encounters

That as many as a dozen top police officers in Gujarat were involved in a series of fake encounters is shocking (“Khaki death squads,” July 7). But there is a silver lining to this dark chapter. While all victims except Tulsiram Prajapati were Muslims, many who tirelessly fought for justice are Hindus. The action by the likes of D.G. Vanzara would not have seen the light of day had it not been for the judiciary and a few media houses like The Hindu .

Intelligence agencies and police should not be questioned over everything they do. We do not even know all that we have been spared thanks to the dedicated work of these agencies. Any excess or irregularities which involve them should be dealt by courts that are exclusive to them. They should not be discussed openly.
