Playing Parvez

The editorial “Playing Parvez” (Aug. 7) was balanced. Parvez Rasool was selected in the Indian contingent to tour Zimbabwe on merit, and not because he hailed from Jammu and Kashmir. In the same way, let us wish he will earn a place in a future playing 11 on the basis of merit alone.

C.G. Kuriakose,

Kothamangalam

It is only a matter of time before Rasool finds his place in the playing 11. He is lucky to be in an era when merit gets priority over regional interests in the selection of the national team. While Rasool would have been eager to display his talent, the captain would have also wanted to establish his credentials by handing out a whitewash to Zimbabwe.

S.S. Varadarajan,

Palakkad

Of course Rasool’s inclusion in an ODI would not have helped to end the alienation of Kashmiris. But the fact that the promising cricketer was not chosen to play the last ODI, that too against Zimbabwe, was unfortunate. India would have won the series anyway.
