Undoubtedly, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam belongs to a generation that transcended the rigidities of caste, class and creed in a multicultural and multi religious society such as India (“ >An impact that will endure ”, July 30). In his demise the country has lost a visionary. With his fund of optimism, value for humanity and being an everlasting source of inspiration, he will be remembered for a long time.

One tends to compare this “People’s President” to Gandhiji who inspired millions of this land. They both could transcend the barriers of caste and creed and spot the unity of all humans. What distinguishes Dr. Kalam from the father of the nation was his readiness to move with the times, especially see India’s necessity to go nuclear, and negotiate for global peace from a position of national strength. He dreamt of the day when this country would become a developed nation, but not a domineering superpower.
