As the editorial (Dec. 29) points out, the post-poll alliance between the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and the Bharatiya Janata Party is nothing but opportunistic. It is appalling that political values are deteriorating steadily. Gone are the times when power was considered a means to serve people. Today, our politicians reinforce the popular slogan that there are no permanent friends or foes in politics.

The unethical and indefensible coalition that the JMM and the BJP have entered into is another example of opportunistic politics. The fractured verdict in Jharkhand clearly shows the confused state of the voter’s mind. A blessed state with abundant natural resources, Jharkhand has many stumbling blocks to overcome, thanks to the lackadaisical governance offered by the previous leaders. Shibu Soren will have to prove his mettle more in dealing with his fellow political bargainers.
