Opinion polls

The Hindu ’s initiative to bring some of the established parties in Tamil Nadu under one roof to discuss the effectiveness of opinion polls is welcome (Nov. 23). The fact is that opinion polls are opposed by parties that are headed for the losing trail. It is also a fact that there are many voters who keep their choice a secret and reveal it only on the day of voting.

Some polls are done in an unscientific manner, to promote a particular party and are funded by vested interests. Opinion polls conducted in an unbiased manner will promote democratic values and point to a possible outcome.

Today, most media houses seem biased. The political awareness spread by well-organised, scientific, transparent and responsible opinion polls will be more trustworthy than biased opinions by the media. Additionally, pre-election feedback will help political parties improve their stand. Opinion polls need to be promoted.

There is nothing wrong in conducting opinion polls. Let us remember this fact. It is the performance of the government over five years that largely decides election results. Opinion polls are conducted using select sections of the population. Therefore, to say that they will influence a voter is erroneous.
