On Islam

This refers to the article, “ >Islam and its interpretations ” (Sept.29). Extremists have misinterpreted Islamic doctrines to suit their own agenda. It is easy to manipulate religious doctrines for personal gains. Jihad , for example, and as pointed out, is the most misinterpreted word. As Islam is the fastest growing religion, fostering universal brotherhood, socialism and egalitarianism, Islamic scholars have an onerous responsibility to present what is a clear interpretation of Koranic verses, giving no quarter for any ambiguity.

The need of the hour is to improve the system of religious studies in India by upgrading madrasas, gurukuls and other religious study centres. “Illiterate” teachers are largely responsible in many instances for misinterpreting the scriptures and verses and misguiding innocent people. Islam does need an intellectual revolution.
