On India Inc.

The reference to the “unethical behaviour” of Indian businesses (“ >Making India Inc. accountable ,”Dec. 8) reminded me of what former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said during an interaction with newspaper editors in June 2011: “If you look at the list of top 100 firms today, you will find a sea change in that list. New entrepreneurs have come into the list. These are some of the gains of liberalisation which we must cherish, nurse and develop… we must do all that we can to revive the animal spirits of our businesses.”

Corporate income tax worth crores of rupees is being written off by the Centre each year to revive the animal spirits of our businesses. Environmental laws are being diluted by successive Union governments to facilitate the corporate plunder of the environment which sustains us and provides a livelihood for the vast millions of the poor. It is the corporate-servile policies of successive Union governments that embolden businesses to indulge in such “unethical behaviour”, and therefore I would like to express dissent over the observation that “it is not the responsibility of the government alone to act in order to curb corruption.” It is the responsibility of governments on behalf of the people to strictly control corporate houses and curb corruption for the greater common good.
