On economic ranking

It was amusing to read the report, “ >World Bank ranking proves PM’s work: Congress ” (May 1) an apt example of how political parties manipulate numbers to serve their ends. India’s economy has been ranked the third largest in the world based on the purchasing power parity or PPP model. Anyone who is familiar with basic economics knows that India has attained this ranking because of our huge population, most of whom earn less than $2 a day. Under such circumstances, the rankings on purchasing power should compel the ruling party to engage in introspection rather than giving itself self-defeating and self-contradictory messages of congratulations.
