The article “I only want to enjoy my childhood, ma” (Open Page, Nov. 8) brings out the mental agony children face today. They are unable to enjoy their childhood as their lives centre around academics. Money and comforts provided by working parents cannot substitute for the security, love and care children long for. Most parents and teachers fail to look at the world through the eyes of children. The words “Ma, right now, I don’t want to be a doctor, engineer or anything else” continue to resonate in my mind.

The article was moving. The feeble voice of the child pleading with the mother to let her/his imagination get fired drives home the truth that the existing educational system, with its undue stress on marks, is neither interesting nor informative. All of us — parents, teachers and policymakers — are to blame for making children undergo agony at a tender age, when they should be enjoying their childhood.
