India’s nuclear doctrine can be said to be one of the most consistent and clearest of its kind in the world (“ >For a clear nuclear doctrine ,” May 6), its basic components being “no-first-use” and “credible minimum deterrence.” But the time has come to build upon these features and enhance the doctrine. There is a need for improvement in research and upgradation of nuclear arsenal.

For India, nuclear weaponisation is more of a matter of security protection. When enemies are going ahead with weaponisation, we cannot afford to lower our guard. It is also a fact that many of our neighbours are adopting tactics to bleed India in various ways. In order to handle these problems, India must also devise non-nuclear and other pragmatic methods to contain cross-border terrorism.
