NOTA on ballot

May 06, 2016 01:40 am | Updated 01:40 am IST

NOTA is not a choice but an expression of helplessness that “the right options” to choose from in a given list are not available (Editorial, May 5). The trend of more people exercising NOTA suggests that political parties have to take note and do whatever is possible to restore the confidence and trust of the people in the electoral system. There must be provision for people to register their deep protest against political parties which, in their opinion, have failed in every aspect.

NOTA is a welcome electoral reform for people to express dissent towards a political set-up and its policies. The next reform should be to make invalid the election in the constituency where the NOTA option was registered most and calling for a fresh election. This will pressure political parties to begin reforms and work for the greater good of the masses.
