Not enough officers

October 01, 2012 01:27 am | Updated October 18, 2016 12:37 pm IST

This refers to the report “Army faces shortage of officers” (Sept.30). The reasons given are not very convincing. In spite of blaming parents for not sending their wards to the Army, especially short service entry, the Army should first modify the rules governing SS officers. Increasing the tenure of SS officers from 10 to 14 years will only add to an officer’s woes as after 14 years it is quite difficult to start a new life in a civil organisation and without the benefits of pension and medical facilities.
