The article “Home came alive when the TV conked out” (Open Page, June 5) took me back to my days in Valparai, Tamil Nadu, between 1948 and the1980s. There were two film shows with 16 mm sound projectors, screened on the estates during the dry months. Till 1958, the film Tarzan and some serials were screened. From 1958, till the spread of TV coverage, we had vintage Tamil films. It was like a film festival as we went from one permanent theatre in Mudis to two touring talkies at Valparai and Rottikadai. It was an occasion to meet friends and family. The “open air show” was unforgettable. The advent of television brought all this to an abrupt end.
