While the government may theoretically be within its rights to appoint the next army chief, it should ponder over the fact that it is on its way out soon. Administrative propriety demands that the choice be left to the next government which will have sufficient time to complete the process for such a crucial appointment. There are no security imperatives either that would justify the seeming haste of an outgoing government in the matter. What has happened will only set a bad precedent that will affect morale and discipline in the Army. The BJP must also desist from falling prey to the opinion of retired service personnel and who are now in active politics.
