Magnus Carlsen dethroning Viswanathan Anand heralds a new era in the game of chess. The championship testifies that form matters more than experience, and will go down in history as a keenly contested one while highlighting the generation gap.

Had Anand played the “Clinging” reputation attributed by chess pundits we would have got an extended plot with more interesting twists and turns. But that was not to be. Anand doesn’t play to the whims and fancies of chess critics and has his own way of playing. He just lost against a better competitor.

Losing to a promising youngster from Norway is no setback. Anand would also do well to train youngsters. The fact that there was an encouraging response from the younger generation proves this. Such a positive temperament will be good for the game and India.
