Whether or not former Comptroller and Auditor-General Vinod Rai’s revelation — that he was pressured by the UPA government to drop some names from audit reports in the coal block allocation and Commonwealth Games cases — will have any further impact on the UPA government’s reputation or the dignity of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, it gives rise to questions on the conduct of Mr. Rai himself. Why did he not say he was under pressure to omit a few names, while submitting the reports?

Mr. Rai has joined Sanjaya Baru and Natwar Singh in bringing out the ineffectiveness of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The question why he remained silent while in office cannot be brushed aside, but the government should not delay action against those who swindled public money during the UPA rule.
