This refers to the report that the Chief Justice of India, K.G. Balakrishnan, summoned Justice P.D. Dinakaran, Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court recommended for elevation to the Supreme Court, in connection with allegations made against him by members of the Bar (Sept. 16).
It is encouraging to note that the Chief Justice of India has given due importance to the representation made by some leading legal luminaries. In the light of the serious allegations raised by them, Justice Dinakaran should be considered for elevation only after a thorough enquiry.

The allegations against Justice Dinakaran — of land grabbing and other irregularities — need to be investigated thoroughly. Integrity, credibility and accountability are three essential factors that need to be taken into account when someone is considered for an important office.

Public opinion favouring the declaration of judges’ assets has got a boost with the Chief Justice summoning Justice Dinakaran. When the needle of suspicion points to a judicial officer, the charges should be probed to strengthen the people’s confidence in the judiciary.
