This refers to the article “Why are we meddling with our natural foodstuff?” (Open Page, Nov. 28) and K. Vijayaraghavan's letter (Dec. 1). It is indeed alarming that many people are forced to take iodised salt as many States have banned the sale of non-iodised salt. It is also revealing that in the process of manufacture of iodised salt, healthy nutrients are eliminated leading to a greater concentration of sodium. A needless health hazard in the form of iodised salt affects all. It is puzzling why the choice should not be left to the buyer himself. If this is done, those who are taking supplements containing iodine or who can afford a balanced diet will not buy iodised salt.

While I agree with many of the sentiments expressed in the article, some of the points such as those dealing with the fortification of salt and causes of cervical cancer amount to medical information. The veracity of some of the information is doubtful. For the sake of readers, it is important that only qualified persons present medical information while arguments from all quarters are welcome.
