Mullaperiyar row

The article “Two States and a water issue” (Dec 29) clearly analyses the Mullaperiyar dam issue. Ramaswamy R. Iyer has done a commendable job by pointing out the intricacies of the issue, its past, present and suggestions for the future to resolve the dispute in amicable ways, respecting the sentiments of people of both States.

The 116-year-old dam's historic legacy should be maintained but not at the cost of lives in Kerala. I am at a loss to understand how such an old dam can be called safe when experts predict the life of dams built with specialised technologies at 50-60 years. If the Mullaperiyar dam collapses, Idukki, Cheruthoni and Kolamavu dams will also collapse.
