Mrs Gandhi & Thanjavur

The report, “ >When Mrs. Gandhi favoured Thanjavur ” (special page – “Mandate 2014,” March 18), could have given the full picture on Mrs Gandhi’s plan to contest from the constituency. The fact is that Mr. M. Karunanidhi publicly announced that he would contest the election if Mrs. Gandhi preferred to do so from Thanjavur. There are also unconfirmed reports that then Prime Minister Morarji Desai spoke to M.G. Ramachandran expressing his displeasure over extending support to Mrs. Gandhi. It was only after these developments, and citing “law and order” issues, that MGR stepped back from supporting Mrs. Gandhi.
