Mother Teresa

No words can describe the service rendered by the Mother and her Missionaries of Charity (“Mother Teresa: a remembrance”, Editorial page, Aug. 26). The unstinted support she got from the late Chief Minister of West Bengal, Jyoti Basu, brings to mind an article that once appeared in The Hindu and which showed the esteem he held her in. Some of her critics, irked by her growing popularity, asked the CM to send her back to Albania. To this, Basu said: “If you are prepared to dress wounds, provide medical care and feed leprosy-afflicted people, I will ask her to go back.” There was only deafening silence.
