I concur with the views expressed in “India’s missing women” (Feb. 10). Little is being done by the government to improve the diminishing sex ratio besides the paltry deposit being made in a family’s name and Kendriya Vidyalaya fee concessions for girl children. Efforts should be taken to give greater priority to the girl child in all walks of life so as to improve their lot.

The legislature’s focus has been on increasing the number of seats for women in various policymaking bodies so that gender-neutral policies may be framed. This has been a failure. The democracy principle — of, by and for the people — has not materialised. The composition of governing bodies does not reflect the true demographic of the country; the mix of people electing the government is highly skewed in favour of males.
