Misleading

The article “The demolition that rebuilt a community” (Dec. 6) was biased. The Constitution provides reservation on the basis of social backwardness. The views on the exclusion of the Muslim community from development and restriction of education are baseless.

Muslims have the right to follow a different set of civil laws. We have had three Muslim Presidents. Our first Education Minister was Muslim.

S. Venkatesh,

Chennai

The claim that the Indian Constitution grants reservation only to Hindu castes and not to Muslims or Christians is misleading. Many religious minorities fall under the OBC/SC/ST category. The major reason for Muslims remaining backward is not their systematic exclusion from public life but the affinity a large majority of them have for religious diktats.
