Minister’s remarks

Our politicians have inherited the art of divide and rule from the British (Editorial, and “ >Despite uproar, government backs Sadhvi ,” both Dec.4). Over the years, it has developed into an ‘us’ vs. ‘them’ political strategy that has worked well for the BJP in the Lok Sabha election.

One can cite a number of examples where BJP leaders have made controversial statements. Who can forget the leader who equated the rise in communal riots in western U.P. with increasing numbers of a particular community, or another leader who said that those who do not support Narendra Modi should go and live in Pakistan? These very leaders have obviously been an inspiration to a novice like Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti to try and polarise society.

The apology offered by the Sadhvi makes no sense as she seems to be unaware of the responsibilities and the public expectation of the office that Mr. Modi has given to her. When the Prime Minister has unveiled a vision and a mission for a new India, one that embraces inclusive development, one wonders how he can go about that task with Ministers like this.

Communalism should not be acceptable in any form. While Mr. Modi may have condemned the statement, there is a growing suspicion that right-wing elements are indeed gaining ground.
