Justice Markandey Katju's move to set up a committee to determine a minimum qualification for journalists is interesting. I feel that the art of journalism involves not just the knowledge of news but also a role in portraying a country and its people to the world. This means maintaining some standards and observing restraint wherever necessary. The body most competent to devise such restraints is the Press Council of India. It should think of some course or entrance examination for those wanting to pursue a career in journalism.
