While it is true that swine flu is a matter of serious concern, the media are exaggerating the situation. They should be sensitive and take care not to report news in a way that creates panic.

The government’s appeal to news channels not to add to the sense of alarm is timely. The media ought to exercise restraint in their coverage. Rather than disseminating useful information on containing and preventing swine flu, they are sensationalising the deaths and the news of people crowding at diagnostic centres. They are, in the process, adding fuel to the fire.

While there is no denying that the government, hospitals and doctors need to deal with the situation, it is also every citizen’s responsibility to do so. Since the media’s role is vital, I request that they, rather than just giving the number of deaths, also highlight the cases of people who have been cured and discharged from hospital.
