Many young army recruits work in their superiors’ homes as dog handlers and gardeners, wash clothes, polish shoes, and do the work of not just the officer but his entire family. As for the argument that officers have to use the services of sahayaks at home because of security reasons (Letters, March 27), how is it that the officers of the Navy and the Air Force do not employ sahayaks ?
An Army friend of mine once told me that he was a personal assistant to an officer. But I came to know from another friend that he was doing sahayak duty. He did not want his family to know this. I hope the proposal to replace sahayaks with civilian personnel has not been shelved.
