Matter of concern

Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde’s charge that the BJP and the RSS are conducting “ >training camps ” to spread terror in the country is indeed a matter of great concern. If he is sure of his accusation, he should prove it. If the principal Opposition party is actually conducting terror training camps, it needs to be dealt with firmly. On the other hand, if Mr. Shinde said it casually, he must stop doing so in future.

The Congress has rightly opposed the use of terms like “Islamic terrorism” saying terrorism has no religion. But now, its leader is using the phrase “Hindu terrorism.” It is a perfect example of dual standards practised by the Congress.

Ours is perhaps the only country where the Union Home Minister is aware that a political party and its mentor are running training camps to spread terror but has not taken any action against them. This shows how serious his charges are and how serious he is about tackling terrorism in India.

One hopes Mr. Shinde will stand by what he says. In recent times, we have witnessed many leaders making some remarks only to deny them later.

Mr. Shinde has resumed the dangerous game of communalising and colouring terrorism, started by Digvijay Singh last year. His accusation seems to be a ploy to divert attention from the UPA government’s failure to curb corruption, rein in inflation and contain insurgency and terrorism emanating from across the border.

Mr. Shinde’s remark suggesting that the RSS and the BJP are running training camps inciting “Hindu terror” is condemnable. It will only serve to create fear in the minds of the minorities and help extremists in their recruitment drive. The irresponsible statement seems to be an attempt to consolidate the minority vote bank.

Kozhikode

Mr. Shinde’s acknowledgement that the BJP and the RSS were behind the bomb blasts on the Samjhauta Express, Hyderabad’s Mecca Masjid and Malegaon mosque, but they blamed the minority community for the crime exposes their sinister designs. The Home Ministry should explain to the nation how the blasts were planned and executed and punish the guilty. The government should keep a strong watch on RSS camps which are responsible for spreading saffron terror.
