Is the proposed mission to Mars a dire necessity for India? Are there no other issues craving for immediate attention? Agreed, we can send the message that we are a power to be reckoned with in space science. But of what use is this pride when we cannot tackle basic problems in health and education? Our farmers are languishing in the wild. Inflation has peaked like never before. The common man’s life has become miserable. There is a saying in Telugu that one who does not have even a grain to eat should not apply lavender oil to his moustache.

The mission is not just about collecting information on the red planet. It will prove India’s potential to carry out a tremendous task at the international level. There are some who feel India should not spend on space missions when half of its population lives in poverty. For a country that has virtually written off the huge black money stashed away abroad, Rs 460 crore should not matter much.
