The decision of Sachin Tendulkar to quit one-dayers is praiseworthy (Dec. 24). At last, he seems to have realised that his body has a mind of its own and that there is immense and young talent to replace him. There is the saying: “a professional singer should choose to wind up his singing career while he shines at high altitude with his sweet voice.” Tendulkar must have remembered this.

For someone like me who was cynical about cricket, it was Sachin who, orchestrating the game with his bat, changed my attitude. There must be countless others who became interested in cricket only because of Sachin. I was lucky to be in the stadium to watch the ODI he played in Sharjah in 1998 against Australia.

It is indeed a transitional phase for Indian cricket. T20 has changed the face of the game. The stress should be on blooding youngsters not on the IPL circuit but on proper foreign tours and picking the best talent.
