The comment by Vibha Rao, chairperson of the Chhattisgarh Women’s Commission, that women are equally responsible for crimes against them is unfortunate. What was her intention behind making the comment? Does she want to establish a logic behind crimes against women? We, Indian women, expect more sensitive thoughts and analysis from people holding high offices.

Ms Rao’s views have come as a whiff of fresh air at a time when men and male chauvinism are being held responsible for sexual offences.
Had the statement — that women are equally to blame — come from a man, all hell would have broken loose. Let us hope the import of Ms Rao’s statement sinks in the minds of parents who let their daughters dress in a manner that attracts men.
