Landmark verdict

September 03, 2012 01:08 am | Updated 01:08 am IST

The verdict of the special fast track court in Ahmedabad sentencing BJP legislator Maya Kodnani to 28 years in jail for her involvement in the Naroda-Patiya massacre case has sent the strong message “Be you ever so high, the law is above you”. The wheels of justice have finally turned, albeit slowly, and the witnesses who braved all odds to depose against the powerful stand vindicated. It is indeed a landmark judgment as instigators of communal violence have hardly been made accountable in the past.

The verdict in the Naroda-Patiya massacre case has proved that no one, however powerful, can get away with murder. What about the implications for Narendra Modi who rewarded Ms Kodnani with a ministerial berth? Does not the ruling indict him as well? The honourable judge, Jyotsna Yagnik, has restored my faith in the judiciary.
