The law has taken its course. Lalu Prasad has been sentenced to five years in prison for his involvement in the fodder scam. Although he can appeal the sentence in higher courts, the verdict will send strong signals to the corrupt. The timing of the conviction is more relevant than ever before as more and more scams and scandals surface day in and day out.

The sentencing of Lalu and others is the first remarkable step towards cleansing politics. There is a Persian proverb, der aayad, durust aayad (loosely translated as better late than never). Though it took 17 long years, justice finally caught up with the former Bihar Chief Minister. The verdict is a setback for the RJD as it disqualifies him as legislator. His rather stringent punishment should serve as a deterrent to corrupt politicians.
