The editorial “Kashmir's missing government” (Aug. 17) was timely. Hardly a day passes without reports of escalating violence in Kashmir. Violent protests by mobs and police firing have become common. The events that have unfolded in the last few days make one wonder whether a government indeed exists in Kashmir. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has failed to restore peace in the troubled Valley and this has given a boost to separatist forces. The Centre and the Opposition in the State should support Mr. Abdullah in this crucial hour.

Mr. Abdullah is saddled with a non-performing bureaucracy and a strategically poor police force. Added to this is the power game from across the border to disrupt normality in the Valley. That the violence is confined to certain pockets is no solace. The emergence of new radical Islamist leaders is a matter of grave concern. The frustration of two decades has further alienated the people who consider the army and the security forces occupation forces. The State and Central governments should deliver on their promises and win the confidence of the people.
