Karnad was right

I endorse Mushirul Hasan’s views on Naipaul (Nov. 7). Naipaul suffers from chronic Islamophobia. Unless he overcomes that, objectivity, the hallmark of a true academician, will be the major casualty. I admire Karnad for his intellectual candour and integrity in exposing the mindset of Naipaul at the literary festival without mincing words.

There is no denying the fact that Naipaul’s views on Islam and Muslims are far from being true and accurate. Anil Dharker’s defence of Naipaul — that his wife is a Muslim and her two children are being brought up as Muslim — is unconvincing because Islam does not recognise any such relationship.
