One can understand it to be logical if India reaches agreements or signs MoUs with Japan in the fields of automobile, electronic, robotic or bullet train technology since Japan is the pioneer in all these fields (“ >Kashi, Kyoto in heritage pact ,” Aug. 31). But I fail to understand what type of help or assistance India can receive from Japan in the fields of culture, tradition and heritage in making Varanasi a heritage city. It is India that is the leader here.

Considering that Japan happens to be the world’s third largest economy and one of the most technologically advanced nations of the world, it bodes well for India that its ties with Japan are improving by the day. The fact that Japan is firmly in India’s sights given the spate of high-level visits shows how enthusiastic it is in bolstering bilateral ties. However, India needs to exercise utmost caution lest it irretrievably falls into a debt-trap. It should also refrain from being drawn into a triangular security dialogue involving Washington, Tokyo and Canberra.
