Jaipal Reddy’s ouster from the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry is yet another example of the UPA government’s pro-corporate sector mindset. Mr. Reddy has paid the price for being disloyal to the corporate empire.

One is reminded of Mani Shankar Aiyar who was removed from the Oil Ministry in January 2006 for drawing up a long-term road map to achieve energy security in collaboration with Iran, much to America’s discomfort. This time round, it is our own home-grown powerful industrial house which found Mr. Reddy too difficult to manage. While Veerappa Moily, his successor, is also a man of integrity, we will have to wait and see whether he continues to pursue the policy direction of his illustrious predecessor with regard to RIL.

No doubt, it is the Prime Minister’s prerogative to decide on the portfolio of a Minister. But the shifting of Mr. Reddy is a reflection of how the UPA government treats honest and efficient Ministers.
