Informative

The Hindu ’s investigative reports on rape cases are informative. They highlight the complex nature of the crime, which is otherwise generalised. It is shocking to learn that a third of the cases deal with consenting couples. Those who clamour for the death penalty for rape should think again. More research is needed to understand the complex stories behind rape. Only then can we formulate a sound policy.

Rape is the worst crime committed against a woman. It shatters her physically and mentally. But in most cases, the accused escape punishment and mingle in society without any remorse. Many women and their parents do not come forward to report the crime. Police, too, do not treat rape victims sympathetically. Delhi, the capital of the country, has unfortunately become a crime capital.
